Go off the beaten tourist track for a trip northward up the rustic west coast and see the iconic view of Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand.  Depending on your interest, this tour can be done focusing on a combination of either food, scenery, nature or culture.

  • Scenery is plenty, from the 16 mile, longest stretch of beach in South Africa at Yzerfrontein to the old fishing village of Paternoster, where the buildings all have the same white-washed façade and the beach is littered with colorful fishing boats.  Photographers get ready!
  • In terms of food, there is craft beer at Darling Brew, wine at Groote Post, Darling Cellars or Cloof wine estate, olives at Darling Olives and even toffee tastings in the town of Darling!
  • The nature lover can find tranquility at Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, home to the last manned lighthouse in South Africa or a visit to the West Coast Fossil Park, where you’ll find the world’s richest concentration of fossils dating back over five million years ago.  In spring the wildflowers blooming at the West Coast National Park together with the birdlife it offers is a great option.
  • If culture and history is your preference, the town of Darling with South Africa’s most famous aunt Evita Bezuidenhout, offers a quirky look into South Africa’s troubled past, with the garden at Evita se Peron sprinkled with humorous art pieces.  Alternatively, you can do a heritage walk in Mamre, at the historical Moravian Mission Station.  Get to meet locals and find out how they grew up as you stroll under oak trees that date back 300 years.  For a more native twist, visit !Khwa ttu Culture and Education Centre for a San Guided Experience either be by foot, safari vehicle or mountain bike (weather dependent) to see fresh animal tracks, a replica San village and get to know the herbaceous fynbos of the area and its many uses.
